Percival Lafer attrib. easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs is attributed to Brazilian designer Percival Lafer and was most likely produced by Lafer MP in Brazil during the 1960s. Known for his innovative approach to modern furniture design, Lafer became one of the key figures of Brazilian mid-century modernism, combining robust craftsmanship with luxurious comfort. His works often merged high-quality materials with ergonomic forms, and this pair is a strong example of his philosophy.
The chairs feature a solid wooden frame, likely rosewood, with warm tones and a rich grain that contrast beautifully against the deep green velvet upholstery. The original velvet remains in very good condition, showcasing only minor signs of wear consistent with age, while the leather support elements add a refined structural detail. One seat shows a small area of damage, but it does not affect the overall appearance or integrity of the piece. The generous, low-slung proportions and deep cushioning provide a high level of comfort, while the distinctive button-tufted design and soft contours highlight the era’s focus on organic modernism.
These chairs embody the aesthetic values of Brazilian mid-century furniture, combining Scandinavian functionalism with the bold materiality and craftsmanship characteristic of South American design. The restrained yet sculptural silhouette reflects the period’s emphasis on simplicity and material honesty. The pair also complements a matching sofa from the same series, offering an opportunity to assemble a complete lounge suite.
Dimensions are 90 cm wide, 80 cm deep, and 74 cm high (35.4 x 31.5 x 29.1 in), with a seat height of 40 cm (15.7 in)
