Percival Lafer easy chair
This exceptionally rare lounge chair with matching ottoman was designed by Percival Lafer and produced by Lafer MP in Brazil during the 1970s. The set exemplifies Lafer’s progressive approach to modern comfort and industrial craftsmanship, combining a sculptural profile with practical adjustability and the use of luxurious materials.
Both the chair and ottoman feature rosewood bases with cruciform leg structures crafted from solid wood, showcasing warm dark brown tones and visible grain patterns typical of the species. The seating shells are upholstered in original cognac-toned leather, which has developed a soft sheen and natural creases over time, reflecting patina consistent with age and use. The leather is stitched and laced along the seams with rawhide ties, a distinctive artisanal detail that is characteristic of Lafer’s work.
The chair’s geometric, low-slung form presents an enveloping trapezoidal body with a deeply padded interior. The tufted cushioning enhances both comfort and the dimensional texture of the leather surface. A notable functional element is the adjustable headrest, mounted on a dark-stained wooden support panel, allowing users to customize ergonomic positioning. The ottoman echoes the chair’s angular design, tapering toward the base and providing harmonious leg support.
Percival Lafer, born in 1936, is regarded as one of Brazil’s leading mid-century furniture designers. His work often combined modularity, affordability, and innovative material use, while prioritizing comfort and aesthetic refinement. Lafer MP, the manufacturing company he founded, was instrumental in promoting Brazilian design on the international stage throughout the 1960s and 70s.
This lounge chair and ottoman set remains in good vintage condition, showing signs of wear typical of the leather upholstery, including minor scuffs and softening but no structural issues. The rosewood bases are stable and intact, and the headrest adjustment mechanism operates smoothly. The chair measures 85 centimeters wide, 87 centimeters deep, and 78 centimeters high, with a seat height of 39 centimeters (approximately 33.5 by 34.3 by 30.7 inches, seat height 15.4 inches). The ottoman measures 65 centimeters wide, 55 centimeters deep, and 40 centimeters high (approximately 25.6 by 21.7 by 15.7 inches).
