Tage Westberg easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs was designed by Swedish designer Tage Westberg and produced in Sweden during the 1960s. Constructed with solid beech wood frames, the chairs are fully upholstered in high-quality patinated cognac-toned leather. The design strikes a balance between traditional upholstery craftsmanship and the comfort-oriented principles emerging in Scandinavian modernism during the postwar period.
The chairs feature a slightly reclined, high backrest with a softly curved profile that transitions seamlessly into a generous seat and integrated armrests. The armrests are upholstered and rest upon exposed, tapered beechwood supports that echo the form of the front and rear legs. The overall proportions are compact yet inviting, crafted to encourage a relaxed seating posture. Decorative leather-covered tacks line the outer seams along the rear and underside of the frame, lending a handcrafted touch to the design.
The cognac leather shows an even, natural patina with tonal variations and surface textures reflecting age and use. The condition aligns with typical vintage wear, including creasing, minor surface scratches, and softening of the leather, all of which add character and authenticity. The beechwood legs remain sturdy with minimal signs of wear.
Though Tage Westberg is a lesser-known figure in Scandinavian design, his work reflects the ethos of Swedish craftsmanship and understated elegance. This pair exemplifies the mid-20th-century Scandinavian focus on durable materials, functional form, and timeless aesthetics.
The dimensions are 68 centimeters wide, 100 centimeters deep, and 90 centimeters high, with a seat height of 37 centimeters (approximately 26.8 by 39.4 by 35.4 inches, seat height 14.6 inches).
