Hans Bergström wall lamp
This rare outdoor wall lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. The lamp is executed in copper with a distinctive conical shade perforated with rows of cross-shaped cutouts. These perforations not only provide a decorative element but also create patterned light effects when the lamp is illuminated, casting a soft geometric glow against the wall.
The surface shows a rich patina of weathered copper, ranging from dark brown to green oxidized tones, the result of decades of natural aging and outdoor exposure. This patination emphasizes the lamp’s authenticity and period character, while also highlighting the durability of copper as a material chosen for outdoor use. The wall-mounted arm and circular base are designed in simple, functional lines, complementing the sculptural qualities of the shade.
Hans Bergström, a key figure in Swedish lighting design, founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934. Under his leadership, the company became one of Sweden’s most important lighting manufacturers, known for high-quality craftsmanship and innovative designs. Bergström’s work often combined practical functionality with decorative refinement, making his lamps suitable for both domestic and architectural contexts.
The lamp remains in good condition with visible signs of use and a pleasing patina that testifies to its age and originality. It stands as an early example of Scandinavian modern lighting for outdoor environments, combining robust materials with an attention to detail that characterizes Bergström’s work.
