Information

This pair of ceiling lamps, model 9068 often referred to as Starry Sky, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. Each lamp combines brass, black-lacquered metal, and a glass diffuser arranged in a compact geometric composition. The exterior shade is formed from a rounded square metal shell with a black lacquered finish, perforated with a regular grid of small circular openings. These perforations create a dispersed pattern of light points, contributing to the “starry” lighting effect when illuminated.

The lamps feature a brass cylindrical ceiling mount and an internal brass grid that functions as a structured louver. This grid moderates the direct downward light while reflecting warm tones onto the surrounding metal surfaces. The brass elements retain their original surface with natural patination visible throughout, characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian brass lighting. The glass diffuser is positioned above the brass grid and softens the illumination, resulting in a balanced and subdued lighting atmosphere.

Paavo Tynell’s work during the mid-century period is recognized for its refined metalwork and exploration of perforation, shadow, and patterned light. His designs for Idman often combined industrial precision with decorative subtlety, producing luminaires that contribute both functionally and aesthetically to interior environments. Model 9068 reflects this approach through its interplay of structured geometry, perforated surfaces, and warm brass reflection.

Both lamps remain in good vintage condition with small signs of age and usage, including minor wear to the lacquered surface and some patina on the brass grid.

Each lamp measures 24 cm in width, 24 cm in depth, and 23.5 cm in height. The dimensions correspond approximately to 9.4 x 9.4 x 9.3 inches.
