Information

This rare ceiling lamp, model 1382, was designed by Paavo Tynell in the 1930s and produced by Taito in Finland. The lamp belongs to Tynell’s early production period, when his work was strongly influenced by Art Deco ideals, combining ornamental detailing with a clear structural logic and an emphasis on atmospheric light.

The construction is executed in patinated brass with eight curved arms radiating symmetrically from a central body. Each arm supports a softly rounded glass shade, creating a balanced circular composition when viewed from below. The brass surfaces display a warm golden tone with visible age-related patina, particularly on the central plate, arms, and ceiling canopy. The glass shades are newly produced replacements, carefully made to correspond to the shape, size, and translucency of the original shades, allowing the lamp to retain its historical character while remaining fully functional.

The light quality is characteristic of Tynell’s approach to illumination. The opaline glass shades diffuse the light evenly, producing a warm and soft glow that emphasizes the brass structure without glare. When lit, the lamp creates a calm ambient light suitable for dining rooms or larger living spaces, while also functioning as a sculptural centerpiece. The upward and outward orientation of the shades contributes to an even distribution of light across the ceiling and surrounding space.

Paavo Tynell is widely regarded as one of the most important lighting designers of the Nordic modern movement. His work for Taito, where he served as artistic director, helped define Finnish lighting design from the 1930s through the postwar decades. Early models such as this one demonstrate his ability to merge decorative traditions with emerging modernist principles, often using brass, glass, and refined detailing to create lamps that were both functional and visually distinctive.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, with small signs of usage consistent with age and an attractive, even patina to the brass components.

Dimensions are approximately 65 cm in diameter and 73 cm in total height, corresponding to about 25.6 inches in diameter and 28.7 inches in height.
