Hans-Agne Jakobsson ceiling lamps
This special commissioned ceiling lamp, model C 2438, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, in 1981. The model was developed specifically for a hotel interior project carried out between 1981 and 1983 in close collaboration with Ljungberg’s I&D Arkitekter. Only a limited number of examples were produced for this commission, making the model a rare and well-documented example of Jakobsson’s later work in architectural lighting. 2 pieces are available.
The lamp is constructed with a vertical cylindrical brass body from which multiple horizontal brass arms extend radially. Each arm supports a light source positioned between large curved plexiglass elements arranged in a layered, wing-like configuration. The plexiglass is clear and lightly toned, shaped into elongated, gently arcing panels that surround the light sources without enclosing them. This construction allows the light to be diffused and reflected while maintaining a sense of transparency and spatial openness. When illuminated, the plexiglass creates a soft, radiating light pattern that interacts with the brass structure and produces a distinctive graphic effect on surrounding surfaces.
The brass components display a warm golden tone with natural patina, consistent with age and careful use. The central column and ceiling canopy are finished in matching brass, forming a coherent vertical axis that visually anchors the expansive diameter of the lamp. The exposed bulbs and cylindrical brass lamp holders emphasize the technical and architectural character of the design, reflecting the functional yet expressive approach typical of Jakobsson’s work during this period.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of Sweden’s most influential lighting designers, widely recognized for his pioneering use of indirect light, reflective metals, and experimental materials. While his earlier work is often associated with brass and perforated shades, his later designs increasingly explored transparency, scale, and architectural integration. Model C 2438 exemplifies this evolution, combining industrial materials with sculptural form and spatial awareness.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, based in Markaryd, was known for its close collaboration with architects and interior designers, particularly on large-scale and custom projects. The production of this model as a bespoke solution for a specific hotel interior highlights the firm’s technical capability and flexibility, as well as Jakobsson’s direct involvement in tailored lighting solutions.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with small signs of usage and patina. Minor surface marks and age-related wear are present on the brass, while the plexiglass elements are well preserved with light surface wear consistent with careful use. These traces do not affect the structural integrity or visual clarity of the piece.
Dimensions are approximately 100 cm in diameter and 82 cm in height, corresponding to about 39.4 inches in diameter and 32.3 inches in height.
