Lisa Johansson-Pape ceiling lamp
A rare height-adjustable ceiling lamp designed by Lisa Johansson-Pape and produced by Stockmann-Orno in Finland during the 1950s. The model reflects Johansson-Pape’s refined approach to lighting, where functional clarity is combined with a soft, atmospheric diffusion of light and carefully balanced proportions.
The lamp is executed in brass, featuring a wide, gently domed shade with a smooth, continuous curve that tapers elegantly toward the top. The surface carries a warm golden tone with a natural patina, showing subtle variations, light wear, and small marks consistent with age. The shade is perforated with a delicate pattern of small holes arranged in clusters, allowing pinpoints of light to filter through when illuminated, creating a subtle decorative effect.
The underside reveals the original fabric diffuser, formed in a pleated, radial structure that softens and evenly distributes the light. This textile element introduces a tactile contrast to the metal exterior and contributes to the lamp’s characteristic warm and intimate glow. The central opening exposes the light source while maintaining a controlled diffusion.
The lamp is suspended from a height-adjustable mechanism consisting of slender white cords and a cylindrical brass counterweight. This system allows the height to be easily regulated, combining practical functionality with a visually light and elegant suspension. The ceiling canopy is also executed in brass, maintaining material continuity throughout the design.
When lit, the lamp produces a warm, ambient illumination, with the perforations creating a subtle constellation-like effect across the brass surface, while the fabric diffuser emits a soft, even downward light. This interplay between direct and indirect light is a hallmark of Johansson-Pape’s designs.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with visible signs of use and age-related patina to the brass. The original fabric diffuser is intact, showing minor wear consistent with time.
