Information

This is a rare pair of easy chairs designed by Swedish designer Arne Färnrot in the 1940s and produced in Sweden. These chairs exhibit a distinctive and sculptural presence characteristic of early Scandinavian modernism, blending expressive form with traditional craftsmanship. The high backrests curve gently at the top into subtle wing-like profiles, while the flared armrests and contoured seat support provide both comfort and stylistic coherence.

The chairs have been newly reupholstered in contrasting wool fabric, combining a deep, saturated red on the backrest, arms, and exterior with a pale cream tone on the seat and back cushions. The button-tufted back adds a visual rhythm to the upright form, while the removable lumbar pillows offer added comfort and formality to the overall composition. The legs are constructed in solid oak and taper slightly toward the floor, providing a warm, grounding counterpoint to the soft upholstery.

Arne Färnrot was a mid-20th-century Swedish architect and designer whose furniture work remains relatively rare. His pieces reflect a strong influence of Swedish Grace and early functionalist ideals, emphasizing balance, proportion, and gentle ornamentation. While not as prolific as some of his contemporaries, Färnrot’s work is increasingly recognized for its refined silhouettes and lasting comfort.

These chairs are in good vintage condition with signs of age visible on the oak legs, including a developed patina and minor surface wear, consistent with the pieces’ age. The upholstery is newly executed, ensuring structural integrity and contemporary usability while maintaining historical fidelity to the original design.

Each chair measures 79 cm wide, 87 cm deep, and 104 cm high, with a seat height of 43 cm. In imperial units, these dimensions are approximately 31.1 inches wide, 34.3 inches deep, and 40.9 inches high, with a seat height of 16.9 inches.
