Svend Aage Eriksen easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model GM 5, was designed by Danish furniture designer Svend Aage Eriksen and produced by Glostrup Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The chairs embody the principles of mid-century Scandinavian modernism, emphasizing craftsmanship, honest use of materials, and functional form.
Constructed from solid teak, the frames exhibit a warm reddish-brown tone and finely figured grain typical of high-quality Danish hardwood furniture of the period. The design is low and open, featuring a gently reclined backrest and slender, tapering legs. The armrests curve smoothly upward from the front legs into a rounded shape, providing both structural support and elegant form. From the rear, the backrest reveals evenly spaced vertical slats arranged in a subtly curved profile, underscoring the chair’s structural integrity and open silhouette.
The cushions have been newly upholstered in a neutral-toned bouclé fabric, offering a textured contrast to the smooth, warm teak surfaces while maintaining a subdued Scandinavian color palette. The cushions are fully removable and rest directly on the wooden seat frame.
Svend Aage Eriksen was an active contributor to the Danish modern movement, collaborating with manufacturers such as Glostrup Møbelfabrik, known for its commitment to quality and membership in the Danish Furnituremakers’ Control program, as evidenced by the original metal label on the frame of this pair.
Each chair measures 72 centimeters in width, 70 centimeters in depth, and 78 centimeters in height (approximately 28.3 x 27.6 x 30.7 inches), with a seat height of 39 centimeters (15.4 inches). The pair is in very good vintage condition with newly restored upholstery, minor signs of age on the wood, and structurally sound joints.
