Mogens Koch (1898–1992) was a Danish architect and furniture designer associated with the functionalist tradition of Danish modernism. Known for his disciplined approach to proportion and construction, Koch developed furniture that emphasized clarity, durability, and practical use, often drawing inspiration from traditional craftsmanship and historical precedents.

Biography

Koch studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he was a student of Kaare Klint. Klint’s teaching had a lasting influence on Koch’s work, particularly the emphasis on rational design, precise proportions, and careful study of historical furniture types.

After completing his studies, Koch established himself both as an architect and furniture designer. His work reflects a strong architectural sensibility, where structure and function determine form. Rather than pursuing expressive or sculptural designs, Koch focused on furniture that was logical, adaptable, and built to last.

One of his most well-known designs is the folding chair created in the early 1930s, inspired by traditional campaign furniture. The chair combines portability with structural stability and has remained in continuous production for decades. Koch also developed a modular bookcase system based on standardized proportions, allowing units to be combined and expanded according to need.

Throughout his career Koch collaborated with cabinetmakers such as Rud. Rasmussen, ensuring that his designs were produced with the highest level of craftsmanship. His furniture often features simple geometric forms, carefully resolved joinery, and natural materials such as oak and teak.

Mogens Koch’s work embodies the rational and human-centered ideals of Danish modern design. By focusing on functionality, proportion, and craftsmanship, he created furniture that remains timeless in both appearance and use.
