Information

This rare large set of 14 dining chairs, model J39, was designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by FDB Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. Known as “The People’s Chair” this design exemplifies Mogensen’s commitment to functional, well-crafted furniture that embraces simplicity and durability. Each chair is constructed from solid oak, showcasing the wood’s natural grain and warm patina developed over time. The seats are handwoven from hemp string, providing a comfortable yet sturdy seating surface. The J39 chair features a gently curved backrest, subtly tapered legs, and traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, reinforcing its strength and longevity.

Børge Mogensen, a leading figure in Danish modern design, was renowned for his practical, user-friendly approach to furniture making. The J39 chair, originally introduced in 1947, was inspired by Shaker furniture and traditional Scandinavian craftsmanship, making it an enduring classic in modern interiors. This particular set remains in good vintage condition, with a well-preserved patina that highlights its authenticity and age.

The dimensions are 48 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height (18.9 x 17.7 x 29.1 inches), with a seat height of 44 cm (17.3 inches).
