Information

The stool model Siesta was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden during the 1960s. Its construction features a solid teak frame combined with a leather-upholstered cushion, reflecting the Scandinavian mid-century emphasis on material integrity and ergonomic form. The teak frame is crafted with rounded corners and softly chamfered edges, and supported by gently tapered legs connected by shaped horizontal stretchers that ensure structural stability while maintaining a light visual presence.

The cushion is upholstered in original brown leather, button-tufted in a grid pattern and stitched into square segments. The leather exhibits visible patina with surface creases and tonal variations, especially at the corners, consistent with age and use. The cushion is slightly recessed within the frame and subtly curved for comfort, showcasing Kofod-Larsen’s attention to both aesthetic refinement and functional contouring.

Ib Kofod-Larsen was a Danish architect and designer active across Denmark and Sweden during the 1950s and 60s. His work is characterized by organic shapes, meticulous craftsmanship, and a nuanced understanding of materials. OPE Möbler, the Swedish manufacturer of this stool, collaborated with Kofod-Larsen on multiple upholstered and wood-framed furniture models and was recognized for its production quality in both domestic and export markets.

The Siesta stool exemplifies Scandinavian modernism through its use of natural materials, modest scale, and detailed joinery. Originally designed as a footrest for a lounge chair, it also functions effectively as a low occasional seat or a sculptural standalone object. The dimensions are 67 centimeters wide, 41.5 centimeters deep, and 42 centimeters high, with a seat height of 39 centimeters (approximately 26.4 by 16.3 by 16.5 inches, seat height 15.4 inches). The piece is in good vintage condition, exhibiting a well-aged surface and stable structure.
