Dining chairs
This is a set of six dining chairs produced in Sweden during the 1940s. The design is attributed to an unknown maker but follows the traditional craftsmanship and aesthetic principles of Scandinavian furniture from the period. Each chair is constructed entirely from solid pine, showcasing the natural grain and rich patina that has developed over time. The seat and backrest are slightly curved, providing ergonomic support, while the rounded edges contribute to the overall tactile quality of the design. A distinctive cut-out handle at the top of the backrest serves both as a decorative element and a practical feature for easy handling.
The frame consists of four sturdy, tapered legs that slightly angle outward, a structural choice often seen in mid-century and earlier Scandinavian furniture, ensuring stability while maintaining a visually lightweight appearance. The visible joinery details, including wooden dowels and plugs, reflect the handcrafted nature of the chairs. The set represents a rustic yet functional style characteristic of early 20th-century Swedish design, with influences from both traditional vernacular furniture and the emerging modernist movement of the time. The use of pine, a widely available material in Scandinavia, highlights the region’s focus on natural materials and sustainability.
The dimensions of each chair are 43 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 85.5 cm in height (16.9 x 19.7 x 33.7 inches), with a seat height of 45 cm (17.7 inches). The chairs remain in good vintage condition, exhibiting signs of wear consistent with age, including variations in tone and surface texture.
