Information

This set of four chairs, designed by Gunnar Asplund and produced by Iwan B. Giertz in Flen, Sweden, during the 1930s, represents the functionalist approach that defined Scandinavian modernism. The chairs feature a simple and utilitarian design, consisting of a lacquered metal frame with a red finish and a slatted wooden seat and backrest. The combination of industrial materials and restrained detailing reflects the influence of the Swedish Grace movement transitioning into the early phase of functionalism. The model was designed for and exhibited at the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930. They were used there at Asplund’s “Restaurant Ellida” and also at Asplund’s press gallery.

The construction of the chairs is characterized by a lightweight yet durable metal frame with a geometric structure, incorporating horizontal and diagonal supports for added stability. The wooden seat and backrest consist of evenly spaced slats, allowing for breathability and flexibility. The red lacquered finish on the frame shows signs of natural wear, contributing to the authenticity and patina of the pieces.

The dimensions of each chair are 42 cm (16.5 inches) in width, 48 cm (18.9 inches) in depth, and 82 cm (32.3 inches) in height, with a seat height of 46 cm (18.1 inches), making them well-proportioned for both indoor and outdoor use.

Gunnar Asplund was a leading figure in Swedish architecture and design, best known for his contributions to functionalist architecture, including the Stockholm Public Library and the Woodland Cemetery. His furniture designs share the same clarity of form and focus on usability as his architectural work. Iwan B. Giertz, the producer of these chairs, was an established manufacturer specializing in practical and durable furniture, aligning with the principles of early 20th-century Swedish design.

These chairs were likely intended for public spaces or outdoor settings, as indicated by their sturdy metal construction and weathered wooden surfaces. The wear on the paint and wood is consistent with exposure to the elements, enhancing the historical character of the set. The design remains a rare and significant example of early Scandinavian functionalism, blending simplicity, practicality, and modernist ideals.
