Bent Karlby ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Bent Karlby and produced by Lyfa in Denmark during the 1950s. It features a wide, slightly flared black lacquered metal shade with a perforated lower edge, allowing for both direct downward illumination and subtle ambient light diffusion. The central section consists of an opaline glass diffuser framed by a brass ring with a vented design that enhances the lamp’s soft lighting effect. A brass stem connects the shade to the suspension system, which includes a white canopy and a black cord.
Bent Karlby was a Danish designer known for his refined approach to lighting, often integrating perforations, layered materials, and diffusers to create atmospheric illumination. His designs for Lyfa exemplify the Scandinavian modernist aesthetic, where function and decorative detail are carefully balanced.
The lamp has developed a natural patina on the brass elements, while the black lacquered surface remains well preserved with minor signs of wear. The opaline glass diffuser maintains its original translucency, providing a warm, evenly distributed glow when illuminated.
The lamp measures 44 cm (17.3 inches) in diameter, 30 cm (11.8 inches) in height, and has an overall drop length of 57 cm (22.4 inches).
