Information

This floor lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Sweden during the 1950s, is a notable example of Swedish lighting design. Bergström, a key figure in Swedish lighting, co-founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934 and played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s design language, blending functional modernism with expressive forms and innovative materials.

The lamp features a sharply inclined tripod base made from black lacquered iron rods, arranged at an acute angle to create a forward-leaning posture. The frame supports a narrow, elongated conical shade, crafted from translucent sprayed plastic. This material was commonly used by Ateljé Lyktan in the postwar period due to its lightweight and diffusive properties. The shade is held by a single socket fitting integrated into a small, black lacquered housing at the top.

The shade’s design is defined by radial ribs and a slightly flared open edge, giving the lamp a trumpet-like silhouette. When illuminated, the sprayed plastic diffuses a soft, warm light, with the ribbed structure creating a distinctive glow pattern that highlights the lamp’s sculptural form. The use of plastic in this lamp reflects the modernist embrace of new materials, where both form and performance were prioritized in the design process.

The lamp is in good condition, with visible signs of wear on the lacquered frame, including minor abrasions and small areas of finish loss. The shade is intact and retains its slight age-related patina, typical of the material. Despite these signs of use, the lamp remains fully functional and retains its original components.

The dimensions of the lamp are 40 cm in width, 40 cm in depth, and 129 cm in height (approximately 15.7 inches wide, 15.7 inches deep, and 50.8 inches high). This piece represents a significant moment in mid-century Swedish lighting, where innovation in materials and form came together to create an elegant, functional object.
