Anna-Lisa Thomson vase
Rare ceramic vase designed by Anna-Lisa Thomson and produced by Upsala Ekeby in Sweden during the 1940s. The piece reflects Thomson’s distinctive approach to organic form and decorative surface treatment, characteristic of Scandinavian modern ceramics of the period.
The vase has a softly rounded, ovoid body with a short, slightly recessed neck and a balanced, compact silhouette. Its surface is richly articulated with an all-over relief decoration composed of stylized botanical and marine-inspired motifs, including flowing leaves, abstract floral elements, and softly undulating lines. These raised patterns create a tactile quality and a subtle interplay of light across the form.
The glaze is a milky white with delicate variations, accented by warm brown tones that gather along the edges of the relief, emphasizing the contours and depth of the decoration. Hints of pale lilac undertones appear beneath the surface, adding further nuance. The interior is glazed in a darker tone, providing contrast to the lighter exterior.
The overall expression is both decorative and sculptural, combining a sense of movement with a harmonious, contained form. The piece demonstrates Thomson’s ability to merge artistic ornamentation with functional design, resulting in a vase that is equally compelling as an object of display.
