Anna-Lisa Thomson vase
Ceramic vase executed in earthenware designed by Anna-Lisa Thomson and produced by Upsala Ekeby in Gefle, Sweden during the 1940s. The piece reflects Thomson’s distinctive ability to merge stylized natural motifs with softly sculptural forms, characteristic of her work in earthenware.
The vase has a rounded, ovoid body that rises into a short, gently tapered neck with a slightly constricted opening. The form is compact yet full, providing a generous surface for the applied decoration. The exterior is richly ornamented with incised and relief motifs depicting marine-inspired elements, including anchors, shells, fish, and flowing aquatic vegetation. These motifs are arranged in a rhythmic, all-over composition that wraps around the vessel, giving it a narrative and almost illustrative quality.
The glaze is a warm, creamy off-white with subtle tonal variation, pooling slightly darker in the recessed details and along the carved lines. This creates a soft contrast that highlights the relief work without overpowering the surface. The base is left in a contrasting reddish-brown tone, typical of Upsala Ekeby’s earthenware, and stamped with model markings.
