Information

This pair of ceramic vases was designed by Anna-Lisa Thomson and produced by Upsala Ekeby in Sweden during the 1940s. Each vase is characterized by a bulbous, organic form with vertically undulating ribs that create a sculptural surface. The flared necks are slightly constricted, accentuating the swelling rhythm of the body.

The glaze is a lively marbled yellow with softer transitions into creamy white, giving the surface a vibrant yet nuanced expression. This decorative treatment reflects the stylistic tendencies of Swedish ceramics of the period, which often combined strong sculptural profiles with experimental glazes that enhanced light reflection and depth. The glossy surface emphasizes the play of color along the ridged form, bringing movement and variation to the design.

Anna-Lisa Thomson (1905–1952) was one of the leading Swedish ceramic artists of the 20th century, known for her work at Upsala Ekeby where she created both utilitarian wares and highly artistic forms. Her designs were often inspired by natural motifs and organic structures, contributing to her distinctive position in Scandinavian ceramics. Upsala Ekeby, established in 1886, was a leading Swedish ceramic producer, recognized for its collaborations with important designers who helped define Swedish decorative arts throughout the 20th century.

The vases are in good condition, with minor defects to one of the foot rings that do not affect stability or appearance. Each vase measures 15.5 cm in height (approximately 6.1 inches) and 12.5 cm in diameter (approximately 4.9 inches). This pair exemplifies Thomson’s ability to merge sculptural form with expressive glaze, hallmarks of Swedish modern ceramic design.
