Artur Lindqvist armchairs
This rare set of four armchairs, model P40, was designed by Artur Lindqvist and produced by Grythyttan in Sweden during the 1950s. The chairs feature a cantilevered design with frames made from flat steel, supporting seats and backrests constructed from woven steel mesh. The steel frames exhibit a dark patina with oxidation consistent with their age. The armrests are fitted with white cylindrical plastic coverings, creating a striking contrast against the industrial metal structure.
Artur Lindqvist was recognized for his contributions to Scandinavian furniture design, particularly in outdoor and functional seating. His work often combined industrial materials with minimalist aesthetics, prioritizing both structural strength and user comfort. Grythyttan is a respected Swedish manufacturer known for its craftsmanship in durable outdoor metal furniture.
The P40 chairs embody mid-century Scandinavian design principles, with clean lines, lightweight yet robust construction, and an emphasis on materiality. The cantilevered base offers flexibility and ergonomic comfort, while the steel mesh enhances breathability and adds an industrial elegance to the overall appearance.
Each chair measures 55.5 cm in width, 66 cm in depth, and 84 cm in height (21.9 x 26 x 33.1 inches), with a seat height of 38 cm (15 inches). The chairs show visible signs of aging, including patina and surface wear on the metal, reflecting their original outdoor use and contributing to their authentic vintage character.
