Information

This rare table lamp, designed by Bo Råman and produced by ASEA in Sweden, exemplifies the restrained elegance and technical finesse of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. Compact yet sculptural, the lamp combines high-quality materials—patinated brass and opaline glass—into a cohesive and visually refined form.

The lamp’s base is constructed from solid brass, which has developed a deep, warm patina over time. This aged surface highlights the metal’s texture and tonal variation, giving the piece a sense of character and authenticity. The base features a subtle perforated pattern around its circumference—a modernist detail that not only adds visual interest but also improves heat dissipation, underscoring the functional thoughtfulness behind the design.

Rising from the brass base is a gently rounded opaline glass shade. The shade has a soft, diffused glow when lit, achieved through its evenly frosted surface. Its silhouette is sculptural yet simple, designed to provide even illumination while contributing to the lamp’s decorative presence. The white glass contrasts elegantly with the darker tones of the brass, achieving a timeless visual balance that is both minimal and expressive.

The overall scale is modest, making it ideal for bedside tables, shelves, or accent areas that benefit from gentle, ambient lighting. Its form is harmonious from all angles, and its materials were selected not just for their aesthetic value, but for their durability and lighting performance.

Condition is very good vintage. The brass base retains its structural integrity and displays a rich, consistent patina with only minor signs of age. The opaline glass shade is in excellent shape—free from cracks, chips, or clouding—preserving its function and luminous quality.

Bo Råman, though not as widely known as some of his contemporaries, contributed notable designs to ASEA’s catalog during the mid-20th century. ASEA, a prominent Swedish manufacturer, was well regarded for its high production standards and for commissioning work from a number of influential Scandinavian designers.
