Børge Mogensen dining chairs

This is a very rare set of eight dining chairs, model “Ruder Konge” designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Søborg Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1944. The design represents Mogensen’s early work and demonstrates his ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with functional, modernist principles. Each chair is constructed from solid mahogany, a wood known for its durability and rich, warm tone. The backrest consists of a curved rail with vertical spindles, a reference to historical Windsor chair designs, adapted to Mogensen’s restrained, geometric approach. The legs are finely turned and connected by cross stretchers, ensuring stability while maintaining a lightweight visual expression. The seat is upholstered in natural leather, which has developed a patina over time, emphasizing the material’s organic qualities.

Børge Mogensen was one of the leading figures in Danish modern design, known for his commitment to simple, practical furniture that emphasized comfort and longevity. His early work often drew inspiration from historical furniture types, which he reinterpreted into more functional, democratic designs for contemporary homes. The “Ruder Konge” model showcases his fascination with traditional chair-making techniques while maintaining the minimalistic elegance characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century design. The dimensions of each chair are 58.5 cm in width, 58.5 cm in depth, and 77.5 cm in height (23 x 23 x 30.5 inches), with a seat height of 45 cm (17.7 inches). The set remains in good vintage condition, with wear on the leather seats and minor patina on the wooden frames, consistent with age and use.
