Børge Mogensen dining chairs
This is a rare and complete set consisting of six model BM-61 side chairs and two model BM-62 armchairs, designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The chairs are constructed with solid oak frames and feature original woven cane seats and backs, showcasing the craftsmanship and restrained elegance typical of Mogensen’s work.
The design is geometrically minimalistic, with clearly delineated right-angled legs and cantilevered forms in the side chairs, providing both a visual lightness and structural efficiency. The armchairs follow the same construction principles but incorporate linear armrests, enhancing both comfort and formal clarity. The warm golden-brown oak and natural cane weaving create a tone-on-tone palette that emphasizes material authenticity and Scandinavian craftsmanship.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a leading figure in Danish modern design, known for his functional and democratic approach to furniture. A student of Kaare Klint and contemporary of Hans Wegner, Mogensen’s designs reflect a philosophy of accessibility, utility, and enduring aesthetics. The BM-61 and BM-62 models were part of his broader efforts to create furniture that would suit modern lifestyles while retaining traditional woodworking values.
Fredericia Stolefabrik, founded in 1911, became an important partner for Mogensen in the 1950s and 60s, producing many of his most iconic works. The company continues to uphold its legacy of quality Danish furniture production.
The chairs are in good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. There are some small damages to the cane weaving. The oak frames show a warm patina and are structurally sound.
Dimensions for the side chairs are 48 cm wide, 48 cm deep, and 75 cm high with a seat height of 44 cm (18.9 x 18.9 x 29.5 inches, seat height 17.3 inches). The armchairs measure 61 cm wide, 50 cm deep, and 75 cm high, also with a seat height of 44 cm (24 x 19.7 x 29.5 inches, seat height 17.3 inches). These pieces exemplify mid-century Scandinavian design through their simplicity, craftsmanship, and functional integrity.
