Børge Mogensen dining chairs
This is a rare set of six Model J39 dining chairs designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by FDB Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. The frames are constructed from solid oak, displaying a warm, medium-brown tone with a subtle natural grain that has matured over time. The seat is hand-woven in natural hemp cord, tightly arranged in a geometric pattern characteristic of Danish craftsmanship of the period. The combination of oak and hemp expresses a strong material honesty and durability aligned with Mogensen’s democratic design philosophy. The construction is robust and utilitarian, with cylindrical legs and stretchers providing structural integrity while reinforcing the chair’s simple rural character. The curved, horizontal backrest is slightly reclined and supported at the ends by the rear legs, which continue above the seat height to form a continuous visual element. This design balances functionality and comfort with a restrained visual language, influenced by traditional Shaker furniture and Mogensen’s focus on utility and simplicity.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a leading figure in Danish mid-century design, known for his work on affordable, functional furniture for everyday use. Model J39, introduced in 1947, became one of his most enduring designs and a staple in Danish homes and institutions. It was originally developed during his tenure as head of design at FDB Møbler, an initiative to produce high-quality furniture for the general public. The set is in good vintage condition with signs of age and wear, including some darkening of the oak and minor irregularities in the hemp cord. The frames are structurally sound, and the seating surfaces remain firm and usable.
Each chair measures 48 cm in width, 44 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm, which corresponds to approximately 18.9 inches wide, 17.3 inches deep, 29.1 inches high, and 17.3 inches seat height.
