Ceiling lamps
A rare pair of flush mount ceiling lamps produced in Sweden during the 1940s, exemplifying the restrained and rational language of Scandinavian Functionalism. The design is defined by a broad, circular glass shade with a softly stepped profile, creating a layered disc form that sits close to the ceiling. The glass has a pale, slightly greenish tint when unlit and becomes warm and evenly diffused when illuminated, producing a calm, ambient light distribution.
Each lamp is constructed with a nickel plated metal ceiling cup and central fitting, paired with a substantial glass diffuser. The metal components have a clean, understated geometry typical of the period, emphasizing function and proportion rather than ornament. The glass is thick and precisely formed, with subtle concentric rings that contribute both to the visual depth and to the controlled diffusion of light.
The lamps date from the 1940s, a period when Swedish lighting design was strongly influenced by Functionalist ideals, focusing on practicality, material honesty and visual clarity. Flush mount ceiling lamps of this scale were often used in public interiors as well as private homes, valued for their ability to provide generous illumination without dominating the space.
The pair is in excellent condition, with the glass shades intact and free from cracks or chips, and the nickel plated metal showing only minimal, age-appropriate signs of wear. The overall impression is very well preserved, maintaining both structural integrity and aesthetic balance.
Each lamp measures 65 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 25.6 inches in diameter and 7.9 inches in height.
