Eric Chambert tray table

Information

This very rare tray table was designed by Swedish architect and designer Eric Chambert and produced by AB Chamberts Möbelfabrik in Norrköping, Sweden, in 1931. It is an exceptional example of Scandinavian Art Deco, showcasing both the decorative finesse of the style and a high level of craftsmanship in marquetry and cabinetmaking.

The table features a demountable rectangular tray top, fitted with intricate intarsia—inlaid designs created from contrasting wood veneers that form a stylized geometric and neoclassical motif. The marquetry incorporates natural tones of birch and darker exotic woods, framed by a striped pattern in what appears to be Macassar ebony or similarly striped veneer. The surface is protected under a glass pane, ensuring the intricate craftsmanship remains visible and preserved.

The tray is removable, allowing the table to function both as a standard table and as a portable serving unit. It rests securely within a recessed edge on the main table frame, which is constructed of stained birch with a warm, deep brown hue. The base is supported by four square-tapered legs, detailed with vertical fluting at the top and subtle French foot curves at the bottom. These features reflect the Art Deco style’s decorative influences while maintaining a neoclassical sense of verticality and proportion.

The underside of the tray is inscribed in Swedish: “Tillv. vid AB Chamberts möbelfabrik Norrköping 1931, Komponerat av Erik Chambert” translating to “Manufactured at AB Chambert’s furniture factory Norrköping 1931, composed by Erik Chambert”. This marking adds provenance and authenticity to the piece, confirming it as an original design from the early 20th century.

Eric Chambert (1902–1988) was a Swedish architect and designer known for his contributions to decorative arts and interiors during the interwar years. He worked during a transitional period in Scandinavian design, merging classical ornamentation with modernist principles. His work is highly collectible and relatively rare in the market today.

The dimensions of the table are 80 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 66.5 cm in height (approximately 31.5 x 19.7 x 26.2 inches). The table is in good vintage condition, showing light signs of wear consistent with age. It has undergone careful restoration to preserve both its structure and the decorative surfaces, maintaining the integrity of the marquetry and the overall visual appeal of the woodwork.
