Finn Juhl & Arne Vodder attrib. desk
This rare freestanding desk is attributed to Finn Juhl and Arne Vodder and was produced in Denmark during the 1950s. Crafted primarily in teak, the desk features a combination of solid and veneered elements, accented by brass details and a distinctive blue-lacquered drawer front. Its asymmetrical construction includes a cantilevered worktop supported by a full-height leg structure on one side and a suspended storage module on the other, creating a sculptural and open form that reflects the early collaborative spirit of Juhl and Vodder.
The desktop incorporates a drop-leaf extension on the right side, expanding the usable surface from 170 cm to 226.5 cm when unfolded. The blue-lacquered drawer front serves as a vibrant chromatic accent, contrasting with the warm reddish-brown tones of the teak. Brass fittings at the leg tips and drawer handle provide subtle refinement typical of mid-century Scandinavian luxury cabinetry.
Structurally, the desk rests on tapering round legs connected by cross-stretchers for stability, each terminating in brass sabots. The floating appearance of the suspended drawer unit, with open space beneath, enhances the desk’s visual lightness. The rear is fully finished and includes a door in matching blue lacquer, enabling central placement within a room.
Although direct documentation is scarce, the design strongly echoes Finn Juhl’s organic, architectural approach and Arne Vodder’s systematic modularity and interest in contrasting materials. Both designers were key figures in the 1950s Danish modern movement, often collaborating with skilled cabinetmakers to create expressive furniture forms.
The desk is in very good original condition, showing minor wear on lacquer and wood surfaces consistent with age. The brass fittings display natural oxidation and patina.
Dimensions measure 170 cm in width (extending to 226.5 cm with the drop-leaf), 85 cm in depth, and 72 cm in height, approximately 66.9 x 33.5 x 28.3 inches (89.2 inches wide when extended).
