Floor lamp
This rare floor lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, is a distinguished example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting design that elegantly combines atmospheric and task lighting in a single sculptural composition. Reflecting Bergström’s signature style, the lamp emphasizes functional versatility, material contrast, and a sensitive balance of form.
The lamp is structured around a black-painted metal base from which two slender rods ascend, supporting two separate light sources. The asymmetrical dual-light configuration highlights Bergström’s interest in blending geometrically distinct forms to achieve both visual tension and practical utility.
The primary shade is a tall, hexagonal form made from plastic resin sprayed over a wire armature—a technique associated with mid-century experimentation in lightweight, translucent materials. This construction emits a soft, diffused ambient glow, ideal for atmospheric lighting. The slightly irregular surface texture and warm tone of the resin lend the lamp a handmade quality, contributing to its organic character. Some gentle discoloration is visible, consistent with age and exposure, but it remains structurally sound and visually intact.
The secondary light source consists of a curved opaline acrylic cone mounted on a flexible brass gooseneck arm. This element allows directional control and functions as a task light for reading or accent purposes. The acrylic shade retains its translucent clarity and is free from cracks or major wear. The brass arm exhibits a mild patina, adding character while maintaining mechanical integrity and ease of adjustment.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996), founder of Ateljé Lyktan, played a central role in defining the modern Swedish approach to lighting during the postwar period. His designs are marked by inventive combinations of material, proportion, and light behavior. This lamp typifies Bergström’s ability to synthesize sculptural expression with practical lighting needs, often incorporating dual-purpose arrangements in a compact and harmonious framework.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use that add to its authenticity. The black-painted base shows subtle wear, and the brass components retain their original finish with gentle oxidation. The overall structure is sound and visually coherent.
The dimensions of the lamp are 55 cm in width, 22 cm in depth, and 152 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 21.7 inches wide, 8.7 inches deep, and 59.8 inches high.
