Gunnar Myrstrand & Sven Engström bedside tables

This pair of model “Dixi” side or bedside tables was designed by Gunnar Myrstrand and Sven Engström and produced by Tingströms in Sweden during the 1950s. The design exemplifies the Swedish interpretation of mid-century modernism, emphasizing refined proportions, functional layout, and material integrity. Crafted from teak, the tables display a warm golden-brown tone with a linear grain structure, creating an orderly and inviting visual effect.

Each table features a rectangular top framed by subtly raised edges along the back and sides, intended to contain small objects and prevent slipping. Below the top surface is a single lockable drawer with brass keyholes, complemented by an open lower shelf providing additional storage or display space. The vertical profile is minimal and balanced, supported by finely tapered legs that enhance both elegance and stability.

Joinery is clean and understated, underscoring the design’s clarity. The drawer fronts are seamlessly integrated into the surrounding apron, while the exposed brass key escutcheons serve as both functional and decorative elements.

The stamp underneath each table confirms production by Tingströms and verifies the design attribution to Myrstrand and Engström, prominent figures in Swedish post-war furniture design. Their collaborations are known for merging practicality with meticulous craftsmanship, suitable for both residential and commercial interiors.

Both tables remain in very good vintage condition, exhibiting minor age-consistent wear. The teak surfaces are well-preserved, and the drawers operate smoothly.

Each table measures 41 cm wide, 54 cm deep, and 54 cm high (approximately 16.1 by 21.3 by 21.3 inches). This pair exemplifies the quiet sophistication of 1950s Swedish design, balancing utility and craftsmanship in an unpretentious, timeless form.
