Information

This pair of bedside tables, model Casino, was designed by Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand and produced by Tingströms in Sweden during the 1960s. Each table consists of a compact rectangular cabinet with two drawers, elevated on a slender solid wood stand. The proportions are carefully balanced, with the storage volume visually separated from the base, giving the pieces a light and architectural presence despite their solid construction.

The tables are executed in rosewood, showing a deep brown coloration with pronounced and highly figured grain patterns that vary across the drawer fronts and side panels. The drawers are fitted with small, curved brass pulls that provide a subtle metallic contrast to the dark wood and emphasize the horizontal alignment of the façade. The stands are also crafted in solid wood, stained to match the rosewood cabinets, and connected with stretchers that add stability while maintaining an open visual structure.

Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand collaborated on a number of furniture designs during the postwar period, contributing to the development of Swedish mid-century modern design with works characterized by clarity, refined detailing, and functional elegance. Their designs often combined strong geometric forms with carefully chosen materials, resulting in furniture that was both practical and visually restrained.

Tingströms was a well-established Swedish furniture manufacturer with a long tradition of cabinetmaking, known for high production standards and close collaborations with designers. During the 1950s and 1960s, the company produced a wide range of modern furniture in fine woods such as rosewood and teak, often incorporating brass details and precise joinery. The Casino model reflects Tingströms’ ability to execute sophisticated designs with consistency and material quality.

The pair is in excellent vintage condition, with only small signs of use such as minor surface marks consistent with age. The rosewood surfaces retain a well-preserved finish, and the brass pulls show a light, even patina. The drawers operate smoothly, and the structures are stable and intact.

Each table measures 50 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 59 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 19.7 inches wide, 17.7 inches deep, and 23.2 inches high.
