Sven Engström & Gunnar Myrstrand bedside tables
This is a pair of model Dixi bedside or side tables designed by Gunnar Myrstrand and Sven Engström, produced by Tingströms in Sweden during the 1950s. These tables are representative of Swedish mid-century modern furniture, characterized by their functional clarity, refined proportions, and natural material palette. Each table is constructed in teak, displaying a uniform reddish-brown hue with a fine, even grain. The wood has developed a rich patina with age, enhancing the warmth of the surfaces while preserving the original finish.
The form is rectilinear and compact, with tapered legs that slightly recess toward the floor, contributing to a light and elegant stance. Each table features a single drawer with a minimalist brass pull and a lower shelf positioned between the legs, adding an additional surface for books or small items. The drawer fronts are subtly recessed from the table frame and exhibit fine craftsmanship in their construction and alignment. The brass hardware is restrained in scale but provides a material contrast to the teak, lending the tables a touch of understated ornamentation.
Gunnar Myrstrand (1916–1999) and Sven Engström were a prolific Swedish design duo known for their work in domestic furnishings during the mid-twentieth century. Together, they emphasized functional forms with clarity of line and high construction standards. Their collaboration with Tingströms furniture company yielded numerous well-regarded pieces, including the Dixi series, which was appreciated for its architectural minimalism and practical detailing.
Tingströms, based in Sweden, was a manufacturer that prioritized craftsmanship and Scandinavian design values during its production in the 1950s and 1960s. The company produced furniture in limited series, often bearing design stamps such as the one seen on this pair, indicating authenticity and origin.
These tables are in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use such as slight surface wear and subtle edge patination consistent with age and careful handling. Structurally, both pieces are solid and functionally intact.
Each table measures 41 cm in width (16.1 inches), 54 cm in depth (21.3 inches), and 54 cm in height (21.3 inches). Their modest size and visual simplicity make them adaptable as nightstands, side tables, or occasional tables in a living or sleeping area, contributing both storage utility and a distinctly mid-century Scandinavian aesthetic.
