Hans-Agne Jakobsson table lamp
The BN-26 table lamp, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, is a striking embodiment of Scandinavian mid-century modern design. Known for his ability to sculpt light through layered forms and material sensitivity, Jakobsson applied his distinctive design language to this model, resulting in a piece that is both visually refined and atmospherically rich.
The lamp is finished in a warm brown lacquer, applied uniformly across both the trumpet-shaped base and the tiered shade. The lacquered surface has a soft, glossy sheen that enhances the depth of the color while preserving the clarity of the lamp’s form. The shade is composed of four horizontally stacked metal discs arranged in descending diameter, creating a dynamic, layered profile. This configuration is not only aesthetically compelling but functionally effective, as it diffuses light horizontally and downward while minimizing glare.
The underside of the shade is painted white to enhance the lamp’s reflective properties, ensuring the light output remains soft and evenly distributed. An open circular aperture at the top of the shade allows additional light to escape upwards, contributing to a warm ambient glow. This multi-directional illumination is characteristic of Jakobsson’s work, where the manipulation of light was central to the design intent.
The base of the lamp is gently flared, echoing the classic trumpet form. This shape transitions fluidly into the central stem, lending the design a continuous and balanced silhouette. The proportions are carefully resolved, with the wider base ensuring stability while visually anchoring the more expansive upper section.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a master of ambient lighting, and the BN-26 is a testament to his philosophy of using form and material to shape the quality of light in a space. His designs, often produced in limited quantities through his namesake firm, are sought after for their subtle sophistication and atmospheric effectiveness.
This example of the BN-26 remains in excellent vintage condition. The lacquered surfaces exhibit only minimal signs of wear consistent with age and use, with the original finish retaining its color and gloss. The lamp is also complete with its original manufacturer’s label affixed to the underside, confirming its provenance and authenticity.
The lamp measures 33 cm in diameter and 45 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 13 inches in diameter and 17.7 inches in height.
