Hans-Agne Jakobsson table lamp
This table lamp, model B-102, was crafted in the 1950s by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, and embodies the designer’s mastery of material contrast and ambient illumination. Its structural core is a slender brass column rising from a broad, flat circular base. Over time, the brass has acquired a soft, even patina—tiny oxidation spots and light surface wear lending the metal a mellow patinated character without compromising its structural integrity.
The shade is hand-blown in amber-tinted glass, forming a subtly tapering cylinder with gently rounded shoulders. The warm honey-amber hue of the glass deepens toward the thickened bottom edge, where the material curves into a smooth, domed profile. Minor variations in color density and wall thickness point to the artisanal production process, while the glass surface remains clear and intact, showing only faint hairline scratches consistent with careful use over several decades.
Beneath the shade, a perforated brass gallery encircles the bulb holder. This crown-like detail diffuses light upward, creating a gentle corona of illumination around the glass neck and softening glare from the bulb. The interplay of brass and amber glass produces an atmospheric, warm glow characteristic of Jakobsson’s early lighting work, favoring mood and shadow interplay over direct brightness.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) trained as a cabinetmaker and architect before founding his own workshop in Markaryd in 1951. His lamps are celebrated for their elegant silhouettes, use of colored glass, and thoughtful diffusion systems. The B-102 model represents one of his earliest explorations in table lighting, pairing minimalist metalwork with expressive glass forms to achieve a harmonious balance between function and sculptural presence.
This example is in good vintage condition. The glass shade is free of chips, cracks, or repairs, and its amber coloration remains vibrant. The brass components show a uniform patina with light surface marks and oxidation as expected from fifty-plus years of use. The maker’s mark—“H.A.J. MARKARYD B/102”—is clearly stamped beneath the base, confirming the lamp’s authenticity. Measuring 15 cm in diameter and 36 cm in height (approximately 5.9 by 14.2 inches), this lamp offers a compact footprint while delivering Jakobsson’s signature warm, atmospheric light.
