Hans-Agne Jakobsson wall lamps
This rare dual-lamp wall fixture, model V-305/2, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own firm, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden, in 1959. It is an archetypal example of Jakobsson’s Scandinavian modern approach to lighting, blending atmospheric diffusion with material clarity. The design is flexible, originally intended to be mounted with the glass shades oriented upward, but it can also be inverted to allow for a variety of spatial arrangements, offering versatility in installation.
The fixture features a symmetrical double-arm structure made from brushed aluminium. The metal is finished in a satin tone, providing a subdued luster that complements the translucent glass shades. Each arm extends laterally from a central round wall mount, with a cylindrical lamp holder mounted vertically at the end of each arm. The arms are designed with clean angular bends at the base, ensuring structural integrity while creating a visually rhythmic and geometric form.
The two glass shades are hand-blown clear bubble glass, shaped as globe-like covers. The glass exhibits subtle surface textures due to air inclusions formed during the glassblowing process, adding character and contributing to the soft diffusion of light when the fixture is illuminated. Each glass globe has a narrow opening at the base, supported by three small pins that allow for easy removal of the glass for bulb replacement or maintenance. The diffused light created by the lamp is warm and ambient, emphasizing Jakobsson’s sensitivity to light as a material that interacts with space.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was an influential Swedish designer, best known for his poetic approach to lighting. After working with Carl Malmsten and Werner West, he founded his own company in 1951. Jakobsson’s lighting designs often aimed to reduce glare and foster calming atmospheres, achieved through the creative use of materials such as wood veneers, glass, and textiles.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB became internationally recognized for its lighting collections, particularly during the mid-century period. The V-series, which includes the V-305/2 model, is emblematic of the era’s focus on functional elegance and was widely specified for modern residential and commercial interiors across Sweden and Europe.
This wall fixture is constructed from aluminium and glass and remains in excellent vintage condition. There are minor signs of wear and subtle patination on the metal surfaces, consistent with age and use, but the construction is solid and the fixture is fully electrically functional with standard sockets.
The dimensions of the fixture are 48 cm in width, 27 cm in depth, and 33 cm in height (approximately 18.9 inches wide, 10.6 inches deep, and 13 inches high). Combining functional engineering with refined Scandinavian modern design, this lamp serves as both a practical lighting solution and a sculptural object.
