Hans Bergström floor lamp
This very rare height-adjustable floor lamp, model 544, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. The lamp is constructed from brass and leather, and retains its original pleated lampshade in chartreuse green textile, making it a notable example of early Scandinavian modern lighting that combines refined materials with functional elegance.
The lamp features a slender brass stem, which is telescopically adjustable in height. The lower section of the stem is wrapped in coiled brown leather, applied in a continuous spiral, providing both a tactile grip and a visual contrast to the cool, metallic finish. The base consists of three splayed brass legs, each ending in spherical feet, a design feature characteristic of Bergström’s work, which emphasizes lightness and stability in equal measure.
The original pleated textile shade is conical in form, slightly flared toward the base. The shade is marked with the Ateljé Lyktan label, confirming its authenticity. The color and texture of the shade contribute a distinct mid-century tonal palette, frequently explored in Swedish interior design during the era.
Hans Bergström, the founder and artistic director of Ateljé Lyktan, was a key figure in shaping modern Swedish lighting design during the mid-20th century. His work frequently merged artisanal craftsmanship with industrial materials, reflecting a balance between functionality and decorative expression. The model 544 lamp exemplifies this approach, offering adjustable height for both reading and ambient lighting while maintaining a sculptural, understated profile.
The lamp is in very good original condition, with minor wear to the brass and leather surfaces, consistent with age. The textile shade shows light use but remains structurally intact and visually cohesive.
The dimensions of the lamp are 24 cm in diameter, with an adjustable height ranging from 160 cm to 200 cm, or approximately 9.4 inches in diameter and 63 to 78.7 inches in height. This piece stands as a rare and well-preserved example of Bergström’s early floor lighting designs.
