Hans Bergström floor lamp
This is a rare floor lamp, model no. 563, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1950s. The lamp exemplifies the elegance and material innovation characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. It features a tall, slender black-lacquered metal stem anchored by a circular weighted base. The lamp’s primary formal element is its sculptural shade, which flares upward and downward from a narrow central waist, forming a symmetrical hourglass profile that diffuses light evenly in all directions.
The lampshade is constructed using sprayed plastic over a structured framework, giving it a softly textured, translucent surface. Its light beige color and delicate vertical ribs subtly reference traditional pleated textile shades while taking advantage of the then-modern technique of sprayed plastic—an approach popularized by Bergström to create durable, luminous forms. A brass pull chain with a spherical finial hangs below the socket, functioning as the lamp’s switch and adding a tactile metallic contrast to the otherwise matte surfaces.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was one of Sweden’s most influential lighting designers and the founder of Ateljé Lyktan in 1934. His work contributed significantly to the development of Swedish modernist lighting, integrating both traditional craft sensibilities and new industrial techniques. Ateljé Lyktan became one of the country’s most renowned lighting manufacturers, known for its collaborations with many leading designers. Bergström’s own output is particularly notable for its fusion of organic modernism and functional clarity.
This piece remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with its period. The shade has preserved its original form and color, with only slight variations in texture due to the nature of the material. The lacquered base and stem show expected wear, including small scratches and marks, but no structural damage.
The lamp is an exemplar of Scandinavian mid-century design, balancing minimalism and warmth. Its upright form and soft, diffuse lighting make it suitable as a reading or accent light in a restrained interior. It measures 159 cm in height and has a base and shade diameter of approximately 21 cm (62.6 x 8.3 inches).
