Information

This rare floor lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. It is an elegant example of early Swedish modern lighting design, combining craftsmanship with a delicate decorative sensibility. The lamp captures the refinement of Bergström’s early postwar production, where brass and textile were used to create a soft, atmospheric light ideal for domestic interiors.

The lamp features a slender brass stem rising from a circular, weighted base, proportioned to emphasize height and verticality. The original pleated lampshade is made from fabric, tapering upward to a wide opening, and adorned with a brass vine motif winding around the upper rim. When illuminated, the shade produces a warm amber tone, diffusing light evenly through the fabric and casting a subtle glow that accentuates the brass detailing. The design is both functional and decorative, characteristic of Bergström’s skill in balancing modern simplicity with poetic ornamentation.

The surface shows an even patina across the brass components, with minor marks consistent with age and use. The original shade has preserved its shape and character, exhibiting natural signs of wear appropriate for its age. Electrical components appear to be in original or period condition.

Hans Bergström (1898–1984) founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934 and became a defining figure of Swedish lighting design. His work bridged traditional craftsmanship with modern industrial aesthetics, emphasizing the interplay between material, light, and atmosphere. Ateljé Lyktan, under his direction, became known for its combination of artisanal production and modern form, influencing the evolution of Scandinavian lighting throughout the mid-century period.

Diameter 28 cm (11 in), height 172 cm (67.7 in).
