Information

This rare height-adjustable floor lamp, model 545, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. The lamp is constructed from brass and leather, with a newly replaced conical fabric shade in off-white, preserving the original design while ensuring modern functionality.

The structure of the lamp features a slender brass tube that gently curves at the top to support the shade. The height adjustment mechanism is integrated into the midsection of the vertical shaft, which is wrapped in hand-stitched leather. This leather provides both a tactile grip and a warm contrast to the polished brass. The base consists of three outwardly angled brass legs, ending in spherical feet that give the piece a light visual footprint while maintaining its stability.

The design reflects Hans Bergström’s approach to lighting, blending technical ingenuity with elegant proportions and a soft modernist aesthetic. As the founder and artistic director of Ateljé Lyktan, Bergström played a key role in the development of Scandinavian lighting design in the mid-20th century. His work emphasized functional adjustability, the use of warm materials, and the creation of diffused, inviting light, as seen in the combination of brass, leather, and fabric.

The lamp is in very good vintage condition, showing minor wear to the brass and leather surfaces, which is consistent with age and use. The newly made shade faithfully replicates the original in terms of shape, material, and light diffusion qualities.

The lamp’s dimensions are 50 cm in width, 40 cm in depth, and adjustable in height from 115 cm to 170 cm, which corresponds to approximately 19.7 inches wide, 15.7 inches deep, and 45.3–66.9 inches in height.
