Information

This very rare floor lamp, model no. 500, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. The lamp represents an early example of Bergström’s work for Ateljé Lyktan, a company he co-founded in 1934 which went on to play a central role in Swedish lighting design throughout the mid-twentieth century. The lamp exemplifies Bergström’s ability to combine functionalist principles with refined material choices, resulting in designs that were both practical and elegant.

The structure is executed in brass, complemented by a wrapped leather detail on the central stem. The base is circular and weighted for stability, while the upright shaft divides into two adjustable arms, each supporting a conical shade. This dual-arm configuration reflects Bergström’s interest in flexible lighting solutions suited for reading, interiors, and working environments. The leather wrap, in a bold red tone, adds a tactile and decorative quality while also referencing the artisanal craftsmanship of Scandinavian design from the period. Brass details, including leaf-shaped adjustment knobs, provide both utility and a subtle decorative flourish.

The lamp is preserved in good vintage condition, with minor signs of wear consistent with age, including natural patina to the brass and slight traces of use on the leather. These surface variations contribute to its authenticity and underscore the material honesty of Scandinavian mid-century design.

Hans Bergström’s contribution to Swedish lighting was significant, as he sought to merge modernist aesthetics with warmth and accessibility. His work for Ateljé Lyktan is especially notable for its experimentation with form, color, and material contrasts. This piece captures the optimism of Scandinavian modernism of the 1940s, where design was intended not only to serve a function but also to enrich the atmosphere of the domestic space.
