Information

This rare floor lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1940s, is an exemplary piece of early Scandinavian modern lighting design. The lamp combines functional elegance with high-quality materials, reflecting the principles of mid-century Scandinavian aesthetics.

The lamp features a slender brass stem wrapped in a dark brown leather spiral, providing both tactile contrast and visual interest against the metallic structure. The base is made from brass with a patinated surface, showcasing the natural aging of the material and enhancing its vintage appeal. The upper section consists of three organically curved brass arms, each holding a pleated fabric lampshade. The asymmetrical yet balanced arrangement of the arms adds a sculptural quality to the lamp, while also allowing it to diffuse light evenly in multiple directions, creating a soft and ambient illumination.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a prominent Swedish lighting designer, known for his meticulous approach to combining form and function. His work often incorporated high-quality materials like brass, glass, and leather, and he played a pivotal role in shaping Swedish lighting design in the mid-20th century. His collaborations with ASEA resulted in lighting fixtures that were both functional and beautifully crafted, influencing the development of modern Scandinavian interiors.

ASEA, originally an electrical engineering company, was one of Sweden’s leading manufacturers of high-end lighting fixtures. During the mid-century period, ASEA worked with renowned designers to produce elegant and durable lighting solutions that remain highly regarded today.

This lamp remains in its original condition, with a patina on the brass components and some wear on the leather-wrapped stem, which adds character to the piece. The original pleated lampshades show signs of aging but retain their structure and remain an integral part of the design.

The lamp measures 164 cm (64.6 inches) in height with a base diameter of 45 cm (17.7 inches), making it a commanding and functional light fixture that serves as both an illumination source and a sculptural element in any space.
