Information

The RY-16 chest of drawers, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Ry Møbler, is an early example of Danish Modern furniture that combines refined craftsmanship with practical storage. Manufactured in Denmark and stamped August 1958, this piece represents the close collaboration between Wegner and Ry Møbler during the 1950s, a period in which Danish cabinetmaking achieved international recognition for its emphasis on quality materials, functional design, and precise joinery. The model is regarded as one of Wegner’s more uncommon storage designs and reflects his characteristic focus on restrained detailing and balanced proportions.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of twentieth-century Scandinavian design. Trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts, Wegner designed more than 500 chairs as well as a smaller number of storage pieces and tables. His work is distinguished by an emphasis on honest construction, natural materials, and organic forms, with many of his designs becoming icons of Danish Modernism. While celebrated primarily for his seating furniture, his cabinet designs demonstrate the same attention to proportion, functionality, and exceptional woodworking.

Ry Møbler was established in Ry, Denmark, and became one of the country’s most respected cabinetmaking manufacturers during the mid-century period. The company collaborated extensively with Hans J. Wegner from the 1950s onwards, producing a number of his most enduring furniture designs. Ry Møbler was known for its high production standards, careful material selection, and ability to translate cabinetmaker-quality furniture into limited serial production without compromising craftsmanship.

Constructed in teak with oak as the secondary timber, the chest features a warm reddish-brown colour with pronounced linear and cathedral grain patterns across the drawer fronts and top. The case has a clean rectilinear form elevated on recessed side supports, creating a visually lighter appearance despite its substantial storage capacity. The arrangement consists of two shallow felt-lined drawers, a lockable top drawer retaining its original key, and three full-width lower drawers. The integrated solid teak pulls are subtly sculpted with softened edges, providing a tactile detail while maintaining the uninterrupted horizontal lines that define the overall composition. Traditional dovetail drawer construction and finely fitted drawer fronts further demonstrate the high level of cabinetmaking associated with Ry Møbler.

The design belongs to the Danish Modern movement of the 1950s, characterised by minimalist forms, carefully balanced proportions, and an emphasis on natural materials. Rather than relying on ornamentation, the visual interest is achieved through the richness of the teak veneer, the precision of the construction, and the sculptural quality of the integrated wooden handles. The felt-lined upper drawers were intended for smaller personal belongings, reflecting the practical yet refined approach that became synonymous with Scandinavian furniture of this period.

The chest remains in good vintage condition, showing light signs of age and use consistent with careful ownership. Minor surface wear, small marks, and a gentle patina are visible across the teak, while the drawer interiors remain clean and well preserved. The original lock and key are present, and the cabinet retains its original structural integrity and finish, enhancing its authenticity as a mid-century piece.
