Inge Davidsson coffee table
This is a unique and substantial mid-century Scandinavian side or coffee table designed by Inge Davidsson and produced by cabinetmaker Ernst Johansson in Sweden in 1964. The table features a striking contrast between a richly textured, thick stone top and a precisely crafted rosewood base.
The tabletop is constructed from a vibrant green natural stone with expressive marbling in hues of deep forest green, olive, black, white, and ochre. The stone’s pattern is highly varied, composed of both large and small fragments, creating a richly layered surface with visual depth. The edge of the stone top reveals a thick profile, emphasizing its mass and the craftsmanship involved in its shaping and installation.
The base is made from solid rosewood with a warm reddish-brown tone. It is composed of a rectilinear frame structure with four square-section legs connected by stretchers. The mortise and tenon joinery is visibly precise and authentic to high-quality Scandinavian cabinetmaking of the period. The frame has been constructed with careful attention to grain alignment and surface finish, consistent with studio production values.
The condition is good with visible signs of use and wear consistent with age. The stone surface shows natural variation but no visible cracks or repairs, and the rosewood base presents with minor surface marks and a deep patina developed over time.
This table is emblematic of 1960s Scandinavian design, merging functionalist principles with luxurious materiality. The overall aesthetic is refined yet robust, allowing the organic irregularity of the stone to interact with the clean, minimal structure of the base.
