Jens Madsen armchairs
This very rare pair of easy chairs or armchairs is attributed to Danish designer Jens Madsen and was produced by cabinetmakers Lars Larsen and Jacob Hermann in Denmark during the 1930s. Crafted from solid mahogany, the chairs feature an elegant curved frame that integrates seamlessly with the overall structure, emphasizing the fluidity and precision of traditional cabinetmaking. The original cognac-colored leather upholstery is secured with visible brass nailhead trim, which adds a refined decorative touch while reinforcing the upholstery’s attachment. Over time, the leather has developed a rich patina, deepening its texture and visual appeal.
The design is distinguished by a rounded backrest that wraps around the seat, forming an enclosed, barrel-like shape that combines comfort with a sculptural presence. The mahogany armrests flow softly from the frame, maintaining a continuous, flowing line that highlights the craftsmanship involved. Tapered legs finished with brass-capped feet provide both durability and subtle ornamental detail, further enhancing the piece’s refined character.
The dimensions measure 69 centimeters in width, 59 centimeters in depth, and 74.5 centimeters in height (approximately 27.2 by 23.2 by 29.3 inches), with a seat height of 48 centimeters (18.9 inches). These chairs exemplify the material integrity and skillful construction characteristic of early Scandinavian modern furniture, blending traditional techniques with a progressive design language. The collaboration between Lars Larsen and Jacob Hermann is known for producing high-quality, handcrafted furniture, and this pair represents a rare and notable example of their work.
