Kaare Klint dining chairs
This rare set of four dining chairs, model 4751, also known as “The Red Chair,” was designed by Kaare Klint and produced by Rud. Rasmussen in Denmark during the 1930s. The frames are crafted from Cuban mahogany, a dense and durable hardwood prized for its deep reddish-brown hue and fine grain.
The design features a slightly curved backrest and subtly splayed rear legs, ensuring both ergonomic comfort and structural stability. The seats and backrests are upholstered in original Niger leather, a premium material known for its durability and rich patina, which has aged beautifully over time. The upholstery is secured with brass rivets along the edges, providing a refined decorative detail while reinforcing the leather. The seat is slightly contoured for additional comfort, demonstrating Klint’s meticulous approach to form and function.
Kaare Klint is widely recognized as the father of Danish modernism, pioneering a design philosophy based on proportion, craftsmanship, and timeless aesthetics. His work was deeply influenced by classical furniture, which he adapted with modern simplicity and precision. The Red Chair, introduced in 1927, is one of his most iconic designs, embodying his principles of balance and refinement. Produced by Rud. Rasmussen, one of Denmark’s most prestigious cabinetmakers, these chairs exemplify the high level of craftsmanship characteristic of early Danish modern design. The set remains in well-preserved vintage condition, with minor signs of wear consistent with its age.
The dimensions of each chair are 52.5 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 85 cm in height (20.7 x 19.7 x 33.5 inches), with a seat height of 45 cm (17.7 inches).
