Kaare Klint dining chairs
The model 3758 “Red Chair” designed by Kaare Klint in 1927 and produced by Rud. Rasmussen cabinetmakers in Denmark, is a seminal piece of Danish modern furniture design. This rare set of 12 dining chairs reflects Klint’s commitment to proportion, material integrity, and meticulous craftsmanship, establishing a foundation for later Scandinavian modernist movements.
The frames are constructed from solid oak, a durable and richly textured hardwood that provides both stability and aesthetic warmth. The slightly tapered legs and precisely joined stretchers reinforce the chair’s structural integrity while maintaining a refined visual balance. The seat and backrest are upholstered in patinated Niger leather, a high-quality vegetable-tanned material valued for its supple texture and rich aging characteristics. The leather is secured with a series of evenly spaced brass rivets, a decorative and functional element that accentuates the handcrafted quality of the chairs.
Kaare Klint was a pioneering figure in Danish design, known for his scientific approach to furniture proportions and his ability to reinterpret historical designs for contemporary use. His work laid the groundwork for the Danish modern movement by emphasizing craftsmanship, ergonomics, and high-quality materials. The “Red Chair” series, originally created for the Danish Museum of Art & Design, is among his most iconic contributions, exemplifying his rigorous approach to design.
Rud. Rasmussen, one of Denmark’s most respected cabinetmaking firms, was responsible for the production of this model. Their collaboration with Klint ensured that each piece met the highest standards of traditional woodworking, with an emphasis on precision joinery and carefully selected materials. The chairs are a significant part of Scandinavian design history, merging classical influences with the emerging modernist sensibilities of the early 20th century.
The dimensions are 58 cm in width, 55 cm in depth, and 89.5 cm in height (22.8 x 21.7 x 35.2 inches), with a seat height of 45 cm (17.7 inches).
