Information

This rare adjustable table lamp, designed by Oscar Torlasco and produced by Lumi in Italy during the 1950s, represents a distinctive blend of functionalist and sculptural design, typical of Italian mid-century lighting. The lamp is crafted entirely in brass, showcasing precision engineering alongside aesthetic refinement, with a particular emphasis on articulation and balance.

The lamp’s structure includes a circular domed shade with a low, dish-like profile and a shallow dome that creates a concentrated light field. Beneath the shade, three exposed sockets are arranged in a triangular configuration, emphasizing the mechanical character of the design and highlighting the functional nature of the piece. The stem consists of two tubular brass elements, connected by a rotating cylindrical joint that allows for directional flexibility. The base is wide and slightly concave, providing a stable footprint while visually echoing the form of the shade above.

The brass surface of the lamp has developed a rich, aged patina over time, with oxidation and discoloration that are consistent with the lamp’s age. These marks, along with subtle scratches and tonal variations, serve as visual evidence of its vintage authenticity and contribute to its sculptural presence. The articulation mechanism remains fully functional, and the lamp provides a focused beam of light with subtle ambient spillover, making it particularly effective in low-light environments.

Oscar Torlasco (1934–2004) was an influential figure in postwar Italian lighting design. Primarily active during the 1950s and 1960s, he is best known for his work with Lumi, where he developed a distinctive design language characterized by elegant forms and technically advanced luminaires. His designs often incorporated innovative mechanics, blending industrial rationalism with refined detailing.

Lumi, based in Milan, was one of Italy’s prominent lighting manufacturers in the mid-20th century. The company worked with leading designers like Torlasco, pushing the boundaries of traditional lighting design. Torlasco’s creations for Lumi remain some of the company’s most celebrated pieces.

The lamp measures 30 cm in diameter and 42 cm in height (approximately 11.8 inches Ø x 16.5 inches H).
