Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model 1349, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1930s. It stands as an elegant example of the Art Deco influence within Scandinavian design, noted for its refined craftsmanship and sophisticated aesthetic. The lamp’s structure is crafted from nickel-plated metal, which has developed a natural patina over time, underscoring its age and authenticity.
The chandelier features four gracefully curved arms, each supporting an original pleated fabric lampshade in a soft cream hue. These shades diffuse light gently, creating a warm and inviting illumination. The overall design is symmetrical and balanced, with a central rod extending from a domed ceiling fixture, ending in a spherical finial at the base.
Paavo Tynell was a pioneering Finnish lighting designer renowned for merging functional design with decorative artistry. His use of delicate detailing and premium materials marked the golden age of Finnish lighting design. Taito Oy, the manufacturer, played a significant role in advancing modernist lighting in Finland, producing some of the most iconic lamps of the early 20th century.
This lamp is in well-preserved condition, exhibiting minor wear on the nickel plating consistent with its age. The fabric shades show gentle signs of aging along the edges. The dimensions are 45 cm in diameter and 114 cm in height (17.7 by 44.9 inches), making it a distinguished example of early Scandinavian modern lighting.
