Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp, model K2-20, was designed by Paavo Tynell in the 1950s and produced by Idman in Finland. The lamp is constructed from copper and opaline glass and reflects the hallmark features of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, including the interplay between warm metallic surfaces, diffused illumination, and delicate detailing. The form is distinguished by its large, downward-flaring copper shade paired with a tapered cylindrical opaline glass element, which extends vertically into the suspension point and downward into a softly glowing diffuser.
The copper shade has a shallow conical profile and features finely perforated patterns arranged in vertical dot formations near the rim, allowing light to filter through in a controlled, decorative manner. The edge of the copper is subtly scalloped with evenly spaced notches, a detail consistent with Tynell’s careful attention to both geometry and ornament. The upper section of the fixture includes an opaline glass cylinder that emits light vertically and outward through the open copper shade. This section is topped with a decorative brass coil structure which visually balances the lamp and adds a touch of craftsmanship to the functional junction point.
The lamp is suspended from a conical copper ceiling canopy. The lighting effect, especially when illuminated, reveals Tynell’s talent for atmospheric lighting. The opaline elements diffuse light evenly while the copper reflects and warms the ambient glow, producing a layered and elegant luminance.
Paavo Tynell was a central figure in Finnish lighting design, known for his refined and often poetic approach to form and material. He co-founded Taito and later designed for Idman and other prominent manufacturers. His works from the 1940s and 1950s are especially prized for their integration of industrial functionality with decorative grace.
The condition of this lamp is excellent, retaining its original finish with minimal patina and all components intact. The dimensions are 36.5 cm in diameter, 31 cm in height for the fixture itself, and 96 cm in total hanging height. These measurements convert approximately to 14.37 inches in diameter, 12.2 inches in height, and 37.8 inches overall hanging height.
