Information

This very rare ceiling lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland. Dating to the mid-20th century, this model exemplifies Tynell’s signature blend of refined craftsmanship and graceful, airy forms. Constructed primarily in brass with fabric shades and glass components, the piece combines technical sophistication with poetic detailing.

The fixture features an oval ring structure composed of perforated and interwoven brass wire forming a decorative filigree border. This openwork element not only enhances the visual lightness of the lamp but also allows ambient light to filter through, creating intricate patterns on surrounding surfaces. The brass structure has been meticulously worked and riveted, with hand-finished textures and polished highlights that reflect the artisanal nature of Taito Oy’s production.

Suspended from the ceiling mount by a pair of curved brass rods, the ring supports six evenly spaced light points. Each socket is topped with a vertically pleated white fabric shade that softens the illumination while maintaining a restrained profile. The fabric shades are cylindrical and proportioned to balance the lamp’s overall horizontal spread. The central mount and brass arms maintain visual minimalism, drawing focus toward the finely articulated ring.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a pioneering Finnish lighting designer and co-founder of Taito Oy, a key firm in mid-century Scandinavian design. He is widely recognized for his integration of traditional materials with modernist ideals, often incorporating pierced brass elements and subtle decorative flourishes inspired by nature and classical forms. Tynell’s work is prized for its elegance, harmony, and ability to elevate utilitarian fixtures into luminous works of art.

The chandelier is in excellent vintage condition with light patina to the brass, consistent with age. The fabric shades are clean, intact, and structurally sound, while the lamp remains fully functional.

The dimensions are 71 cm in width, 56 cm in depth, and 68 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 28 inches wide, 22 inches deep, and 26.8 inches high.
